We love taking part in the big Coastal Currents Art Festival that takes place in Hastings. This year our exhibition is called ‘Faceless’ and it is focusing on modern slavery and human trafficking, in connection with the Hastings Anti-Trafficking Hub, which is chaired by King's Church, and which includes local police, council officers and others. The launch event takes place up here in Coffee Box on Thursday 7 September at 6pm. All are welcome. Free entry.

The local Coastal Currents Arts Festival is at the heart of the Hastings & St Leonards calendar. It's a fantastic three weeks celebrating the incredible creativity of our town's renowned artistic community, attracting thousands of visitors and tourists. This year, for the first time, King's Church Hastings will be taking part, and Coffee Box at the Hastings Centre are pleased to be hosting their exhibition.
During Coastal Currents, the exhibition will be open to everyone. So whether you're a photographer, painter, illustrator or fine artist – beginner or advanced – King's would love to showcase some of your work at Coffee Box.
The theme of the exhibition is Tides, which will capture the ebb and flow of life in Hastings & 1066 Country. Tides will be a collaborative exhibition of photographic and creative works from artists living in the area, touching on the seasons, the memories, the hopes and the realities of life in our town. This is a brilliant opportunity to participate in this festival that is such a key part of our town.
The brief is simple: produce a single photo or a collection of portraits or scenic photographs, representing your view of the tides of life in Hastings & 1066 Country. For each image or for your collection as a whole, please provide a brief story, memory or hope, explaining your chosen theme. Please bear in mind that some photos will be printed at A3 for the exhibition, so please use the highest resolution settings on your camera and submit uncompressed versions of your photos (RAW if possible). Hand your work in to the Hastings Centre Reception on a CD or memory stick, or email email@example.com by Friday 31 July.
If your work is selected, it will be displayed in Coffee Box throughout Coastal Currents, including at the King's launch event on Saturday 5 September (more info coming soon).
King's would love to see your work and showcase some of the outstanding talent from the local community. Other Coastal Current exhibitions will be taking place across Hastings' public spaces between 28 August and 13 September, too, promising a colourful exhibition of creative arts, so note the dates and don't miss this great event in our town.

We were delighted to welcome over 100 people who joined us to enjoy our free Christmas family film, Elf, last Saturday afternoon. Festive staff in our on-site cafe, Coffee Box, did a tremendous job of welcoming our guests, providing a spectrum of hot drinks, snacks and Christmas treats in a warm, friendly atmosphere. The licensed bar was open, too, proving that the film didn't just attract the kids!
The film event was one in a series throughout the year, where Coffee Box opens its doors for a free showing of a themed film. Look out for our events in the new year as we will be continuing to show family films at the earlier time of 4pm during the dark winter nights. On Saturday 17 January we'll be screening the family flick Mr Popper's Penguins, starring Jim Carrey, so save the date and bring your friends and family along.
Alternatively, if you're looking for something a little more traditional this weekend, visit Hastings Centre on Sunday (14 December) as King's Church presents The Greatest Gift, a family celebration of Christmas. The afternoon service is fully booked, but there are still spaces for the 7pm service, which will be a great opportunity to bring along your friends and family. This is always a hugely popular Christmas carol service, and we're expecting hundreds of visitors from across the town, and further afield, so book your tickets here now to avoid disappointment.
And, to say thank you to all of our customers over this year, we're offering free parking from Christmas eve to Monday 5 January. If you're using the Conquest Hospital at this time of year, or need to park your car in this area for any reason, please feel free to use it free-of-charge over this period. If you would like to make a donation to local charity Surviving Christmas instead, our parking machines will be set up to collect donations.
Coffee Box is open until 3pm on Tuesday 23 December, so come in and make the most of the Christmas treats until then. It will reopen at 10am on Monday 5 January 2015.
Don't forget to make a note of Hastings Centre events, and sign up for our e-newsletter so that you never miss an opportunity to visit us or use our facilities. We're looking forward to welcoming you at the weekend and over the Christmas period and hope to see you all again in 2015!

We host a wide variety of events here at the Hastings Centre, which this month has included large kickboxing and wrestling events.
Over 570 people from all over the south, including as far as Plymouth, joined us for the bi-annual Hastings Kickboxing Academy Fight Night on Saturday 11 October. Coffee Box was packed out, the licensed bar was open, and we hosted a night of thrilling entertainment.
Sixteen fights took place over the evening. With a spectacular light show featuring lasers, and a display that almost filled our auditorium to the roof, the atmosphere was electrifying.
Our front-of-house team was on hand to ensure that the whole night ran smoothly. Sound technician Dan Sparks said: "The night was thrilling; I found it really exciting. All you could hear was the crowd shouting and the music was louder than anything we’ve run before."
Stuart Clark, Hastings Centre manager, was also pleased with how the event went, agreeing it was a huge success.
A week later we hosted around 500 people in our main auditorium for an American-style Pro Wrestling event. This also went really well.

The Hastings Centre hosted the Chamber of Commerce breakfast this morning, with dozens of members of the local business community turning out to hear from local MP Amber Rudd. Amber spoke about her new role in Government and, relatedly, renewable energy and climate change, before answering questions about Scotland, nuclear energy, local transport and her own personal political aspirations.
Local business managers had the opportunity to meet together and network over a scrumptious breakfast prepared by the Hastings Centre’s in-house catering team. It included fresh fruit platters, tasty Danish pastries and smoked bacon in ciabatta.
The hearty breakfast was followed not only by a brief talk from the Hastings & Rye MP, but we also received an update on the rebuilding of Hastings Pier and information about a fund-raising opportunity for St Michael’s Hospice.
“This morning's breakfast was really successful,” said Stuart Clark, Hastings Centre manager. “It was a great opportunity for the community not only to discuss important issues, but to see what we're offering and display the hospitality which has given us a good name in Hastings.”

You may have thought the biggest news of the day was the Scottish referendum. Little did you know that new Pay & Display machines have been installed in the Hastings Centre car park!
With their sophisticated design, the new machines are self-powered for improved reliability. There are three machines spaced out across the car park, which can accommodate 160 cars.
We're keeping our low price of just 50p per hour, and we actively encourage drivers to pass on any tickets with unused time. What's more, each parking ticket comes with a voucher for up to £1 off a hot drink in our coffee shop, Coffee Box.

Around 130 people from the local business community enjoyed sizzling sausage sandwiches and an opportunity to 'grill' the local MP at this morning's Chamber of Commerce breakfast here at the Hastings Centre.
After breakfast, which also included Danish pastries, fruit and Greek yoghurt, Hastings & Rye MP Amber Rudd spoke to the group in a packed Coffee Box, our on-site coffee shop, and was then questioned about the pier, street drinkers, women in business, apprenticeships and infrastructure.
Retired local doctor John Geater then spoke during the community slot about Prime, which seeks to train medical professions around the world in whole-person healthcare.
Jonathan Dolding, head of the Chamber of Commerce, said: "It was great to be in the recently opened Coffee Box at the Hastings Centre, seeing it full of local business people networking over a tasty breakfast, and having the opportunity to question our local MP on a range of business-related subjects."
Hastings Centre manager Stuart Clark said: "It's fantastic to see the local business community here. We're all committed to seeing Hastings and the surrounding areas prosper, and these breakfasts give us a great opportunity to share ideas and gain contacts."
